City Withdraws Bid to Buy Hillside Land

Share

The Claremont City Council on Tuesday withdrew its application for $5 million to buy hillside open space through an upcoming county bond measure, deciding that funding priority should go to the schools.

The city had submitted an application to include the 1,220-acre hillside acquisition as a specific project to be funded by the $800-million Los Angeles County Park, Beach and Recreation Act of 1992, which will be on the June ballot. But the council effectively killed the application by deciding not to send a letter of support by the Nov. 15 deadline.

Mayor Nicholas L. Presecan said that he could not support the measure when “our schools are going begging.” But if it passes, the city will get $450,000.
