Aging Nuclear Plants May Seek Renewal: The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has voted to allow nuclear power plants to renew their 40-year operating licenses for up to 20 years. Aging utilities must meet specific standards to prove they are safe before renewal is granted. NRC Chairman Ivan Selin said all the 111 power plants operating in the United States would be eligible for an extension if they take steps to meet certain standards.
