From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Seven opposition leaders and dozens of their associates were detained in an attempt to blunt support for democratic forces on the eve of a banned anti-government rally. The U.S. Embassy condemned the arrests as “blatant interference in civil and human rights.” Kenyan police set up roadblocks on most routes into the capital, Nairobi, and sealed off the site for today’s proposed meeting to keep people from gathering to protest the 13-year rule of President Daniel Arap Moi.
