The Padres, formulating their 40-man roster before the Nov. 20 deadline, added three players to their roster Friday afternoon, bringing their total to 39.

The Padres put pitcher Frank Seminara, shortstop Jose Valentin and first baseman Guillermo Velasquez on the roster. Players on the 40-man roster are protected from the upcoming Rule 5 draft, which resulted in the loss of outfielder Shane Mack to the Minnesota Twins and third baseman Dave Hollins to the Philadelphia Phillies two years ago.

Seminara, 24, was selected by the Padres in the same draft a year ago. He was 15-10 with a 3.38 ERA in 27 starts for the Padres’ double-A Wichita team, earning a spot on the Texas League All-Star team.

Valentin, 22, batted .251 with 17 homers and 68 RBIs this past season for Wichita.

Velasquez, 23, batted .295 for Wichita with a team-high 21 home runs and 100 RBIs.
