The Washington Huskies are in the Rose Bowl, but they have their sights on a bigger prize.

Billy Joe Hobert threw four first-half touchdown passes and ran for another score as the No. 3 Huskies beat winless Oregon State, 58-6, Saturday to clinch their second consecutive trip to Pasadena.

Shortly before the kickoff in Corvallis, No. 2 Miami beat No. 1 Florida State. The Hurricanes will undoubtedly be the new No. 1 team.

“If we win all our games, we’ll get what we deserve,” Washington’s Mario Bailey said. “We have a chance if we can impress the poll people.”

Anybody who watched Saturday’s mismatch had to be impressed as the Huskies opened a 44-6 halftime lead, then let the reserves go the rest of the way.

Hobert, who talked a lot about the national championship earlier in the season, is sidestepping the issue of whether Washington or Miami deserves to be No. 1.

“I’m not going to concern myself with Miami,” Hobert said. “Hopefully, that will take care of itself.”

Washington Coach Don James said the talk about a possible national championship is fine, but added that the important thing is the Huskies are Pac-10 champions again. “Any time you can win a championship in a league like ours, it’s an honor,” he said. “I feel very blessed, very fortunate to be able to go back and coach in the granddaddy of them all. This will be No. 5.”

The Huskies improved to 10-0 for the first time in their history, and dropped Oregon State to 0-10.

Bailey’s three scoring catches gave him 15 for the season, one more than the Pac-10 record set by Doug Allen of Arizona State in 1984. Bailey also broke the Washington season reception record of 55.
