Here’s a Football Role You Can Step Into

Share

DOES CHATTY KATHY KNOW ABOUT THIS?: Just when you thought the possibilities were exhausted in the arena of big, stupid, furry slippers(remember the ones with bears, Disney characters and the Reagans?), there are now giant football helmet slippers--complete with sound effects.

A unit in one slipper produces cheering crowd noises when the wearer stomps his or her foot. For the compleat football fan, the one-size-fits-all slippers (pictured) are $29.95 from Joan Cook Housewares’ Holiday 1991 catalogue. They come bearing the team name of your choice, providing it’s the 49ers, Raiders, Giants, Bears, Browns, Patriots or Cowboys. A free copy of the catalogue is available by calling (800) 327-3799.

DEAR HOT: I have almost no money for holiday shopping. Where are the best bargains?

DEAR HOT SHOPPER: Check out an authoritative, new book just published (“Jeff Hunter’s L.A. Bargain Book”), which you can purchase for $12.95 or peruse at your local bookstore.

Hunter not only lets you in on great, low-cost apparel and jewelry sources, he knows where you can still get a $2 shoeshine (Paris Shoe Repair; 12075 Wilshire Blvd., West Los Angeles) and where you can enjoy a three-day spa vacation for $108.90 (Las Brisas Retreat Center, P.O. Box 500, Wildomar, Calif. 92385; (714) 677-4544). And lots more.

Incidentally, whether you’re in search of bargains or not, the absolute best time of the year to shop is this coming week. The stores are typically full of merchandise. They’re beautifully decorated. And until next Friday, they’re not yet overrun with holiday shoppers.

SHOP IN THE NAME OF LOVE: Actress-singer Michelle Phillips has the deal of a lifetime. “The only time I shop is for the show,” says the former Mamas and Papas member who now appears on “Knots Landing.”

“I get all my shopping anxieties taken care of quite nicely. I get to buy almost anything I want and then wear it on the show. At the end of the season, I get to buy some of it. I just bought a Valentino, an Ungaro, a Lagerfeld and a Thierry Mugler.”

But what does she wear, say, to the car wash?

“I go to The Gap and buy a couple of pairs of jeans and some blouses. Or find something great at Pic ‘n’ Save. I’ve always said Save.”
