PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAMS : Poor Record Is Worst Span Since 1961-63

The Rams’ 8-19 record since 1989 is the second-worst for a 27-game span in franchise history.

Their worst record over 27 games was from the end of 1961 through the middle of 1963, when the Rams compiled a 4-22-1 record under Bob Waterfield and Harland Svare.

The Rams also were 8-19 in the first 27 games of their existence, 1937 through the first two games of 1939.

Since giving up two No. 2 draft choices to acquire him from the Green Bay Packers in October, the 49ers concede they expected linebacker Tim Harris to produce more than the one sack he has so far delivered.

Harris will see most of his action as a passing-downs rusher against the Rams Monday night.

“I think when he first came to us, and I don’t think it was justified, and I was as guilty as anybody, we felt like with him on one side and Charles Haley on the other, that every time the quarterback went back to pass, we’d sack him,” Coach George Seifert said this week.

“And that was maybe a little unrealistic. That has not happened, but his play has been good. He has played quite a bit. He started this last week because Haley didn’t play, and I think he played a good ballgame.

“There’s not a lot of sacks, but i think some of that might have to do with the way we’re playing also, the system. . . . There are a lot of factors that enter into it, but I think he’s playing well.”

Rams Coach John Robinson said he never expected Harris to join Haley to become a dynamic duo.

“No, they don’t use that kind of defense,” Robinson said. “One of those positions is a rusher, the other is a pass defender.”

Monday night’s game is a sellout and will be broadcast locally at 6 p.m. on KABC-TV, Channel 7.
