Mazda, Mitsubishi to Buy American: Japan’s Mazda Motor Corp. and Mitsubishi Motors Corp. announced plans to buy more automotive parts and vehicles from the United States after similar moves by other car makers. Mazda said its purchases of parts and vehicles would reach almost $3 billion by 1994, up from $1.43 billion last year. The figure includes imports of parts into Japan as well as purchases by the company’s plant at Flat Rock, Mich., where local content is targeted to reach at least 76% next year. It also covers purchases of cars and trucks made by Ford Motor Co., which owns 23.9% of Mazda. Mitsubishi said purchases of parts for vehicles made in Japan and the United States would reach $1.4 billion dollars in the year to March 1995, up from $419 million five years earlier.
