Nation IN BRIEF : MONTANA : House OKs Custer Battlefield Change
The House gave final approval to a Senate-passed bill changing the name of Custer Battlefield National Monument to Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, in deference to American Indian views of the battle. Army Lt. Col. George A. Custer and some 265 soldiers and civilians died in the June 25, 1876, battle with Sioux and Cheyenne warriors, popularly known as Custer’s Last Stand. Rep. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (D-Colo.), the lone American Indian in Congress, sponsored the bill, which also establishes a design committee for a memorial honoring the estimated 100 American Indians killed in the fighting.
