Thousands Staying Home This Thanksgiving: Fewer Americans plan to hit the road this Thanksgiving holiday, partly due to the lingering recession. The American Automobile Assn. predicts that 19.5 million people will travel 100 miles or more from home by auto to observe the Thursday holiday. That’s down 4% from the 20.4 million who ventured out last Thanksgiving, the auto club said. Even though gasoline prices are sharply lower this year, the automobile club’s projection of holiday travelers is the lowest since the group began this type of survey during the height of the economic boom in 1985.
