COUNTYWIDE : Food Drive Nets 451,000 Pounds

The recent Scouting for Food effort netted a record 451,000 pounds of food, which will provide about 902,000 meals for the county’s needy.

Donations in this year’s food drive--the county’s largest such annual effort--increased 19.3% over last year’s drive, Boy Scout officials said.

The food drive began Nov. 9, when the Scouts distributed sacks door-to-door with a request to fill them with non-perishable goods. The following weekend, Scouts of all ages returned to collect the bags. Donors were asked to place at least two cans in each bag but many gave much more.

The food was taken to collection sites throughout the county and then trucked to the Food Distribution Center in Orange. It will be distributed to about 200 social service organizations throughout the year.

The timing of the food drive helps the center meet the holiday demand at Thanksgiving, Christmas and beyond, officials said.
