Marina del Rey : Forum on Liquor Laws

Share

A community forum will be held next week to inform the public what can be done to enforce liquor laws and oppose issuance of more liquor licenses at a time when the state Alcoholic Beverage Control Department faces severe budget cuts.

Gov. Pete Wilson has proposed laying off nearly three-quarters of the department’s investigators because of the state’s fiscal problems. The agency issues liquor licenses to bars and restaurants, and it enforces prohibitions on the sale of alcohol to minors.

Organizers of the forum believe that the layoffs will shift the task of enforcing liquor laws to overburdened local police and to the public.

The seminar, co-sponsored by Antioch University and slow-growth activists, will focus on what communities can do to protect themselves. Speakers will include neighborhood activists, city planners and representatives from groups that seek to curb alcohol abuse.

The meeting will be held Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. in the ground floor meeting room of Antioch University of Los Angeles, 13274 Fiji Way, Marina del Rey. Admission is free, but space is limited. To reserve seats, call (310) 823-6560. Validated parking will be available in the university lot.
