A Van Nuys man was killed and two of his friends were injured early Thursday when their car flipped over during a drag race on a Sylmar street, Los Angeles police said.

The driver of the car, Stephen Robinson, was in critical condition at Northridge Hospital Medical Center and will be arrested on suspicion of murder, Officer Tim Cox said.

Robinson, 25, of Sylmar was racing south on Foothill Boulevard near Balboa Boulevard about 12:25 a.m. when he lost control of his 1965 Mustang, which slammed into a fence and overturned, Cox said.

Robinson and his two passengers were thrown from the car. Manuel Carrera, 19, died at the scene and Kevin McCraken, 18, of West Hills was treated for minor injuries.

Cox said it was unclear how fast Robinson’s car was traveling.
