Gary Chalupsky, a former vice president for the Doubletree Hotel chain, has been named the city’s director of economic development.

Chalupsky, 51, will fill a newly created position to oversee the downtown, Town Center, Metro Center, Orangefair Mall and Cal State Fullerton area redevelopment projects. He will also try to improve economic conditions and opportunities for auto dealers. He is expected to fill the post beginning Tuesday.

Chalupsky fills one of two positions created by the departure of Hugh L. Berry, Fullerton’s assistant city manager. Berry, who oversaw public works projects in addition to redevelopment, will retire in March after 31 years with the city. City officials are seeking another person to oversee public works.

“This will mean we will have the full focus of a department head on redevelopment,” said City Manager William C. Winter.

Chalupsky worked for the Doubletree chain in Phoenix from 1982 until last October, when it was sold. Before that, he served as assistant city manager in Monterey, Calif.

He served in the Marine Corps from 1963 to 1966.
