GARDEN GROVE — Bagpipe players played and a flock of white doves were released into the morning’s blue sky during the dedication of the Crystal Cathedral Memorial Gardens on Thursday.
More than 200 people stayed after the Thanksgiving service for the ceremony behind the church. The Rev. Robert H. Schuller, still recovering from brain surgery, spoke at both the 10 a.m. service and the dedication.
Eight people already are buried at the newly built cemetery, which has 6,200 spaces in land plots, crypts and mausoleums. It is open to church members and area residents.
Schuller, the church’s spiritual leader and a television evangelist, left immediately after the dedication for home to rest from the day’s events, according to security personnel.
In September, he was in a coma after hitting his head while getting into a car in Amsterdam. Schuller underwent two surgeries there.
