GM Canada Boosts Plans for Methanol Cars: General Motors of Canada Ltd. next year will start making the first methanol-powered cars to be built on an assembly line in North America, a company official said. The cars will be designed to run on fuels ranging from 100% gasoline to a blend of 15% gasoline and 85% methanol, a blend of alcohol and natural gas. Cars that run on methanol produce 30% to 40% less pollution than gasoline-powered cars. General Motors Corp., parent of General Motors Canada, plans to increase production of cars that can run on cleaner-burning fuels to meet requirements of the U.S. Clean Air Act calling for reduced vehicle emissions.
