BUSINESS NEWS : Foothill Council Wins Marketing Honors

* The Pasadena-based Foothill Private Industry Council has been honored for outstanding marketing by the state Job Training Coordinating Council, which oversees the 52 private industry councils.

The foothill group won first-place awards for its 1990 annual report and its radio public service announcements. Its newsletter, “Update ‘91,” placed second in the statewide competition. Marketing director Katie Safford received the Blue Star Marketing Award.

The Private Industry Council is made up of government, business, education and labor leaders who oversee an annual $2.7-million federal grant for job training and placement of West San Gabriel Valley residents.

* Puente Hills Mall in the City of Industry has received a Professional Services Award from Canine Companions for Independence, a national nonprofit organization that trains dogs to help people who have physical disabilities other than blindness.

Since February, the mall has provided free retail space to the group for puppy training classes, as well as dispensing information and selling fund-raising items.

The mall also provides space and resources for other nonprofit organizations, including the American Red Cross, the La Puente Valley Regional Occupational Program Training Center and the YMCA.

* Denise Harvey-Sellick, owner of Monrovia Travel Service, has been elected president of the Monrovia Chamber of Commerce.
