The Pasadena Unified School District has received a $50,000 grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration for a Saturday Science Academy at Jackson Elementary School.

The six-week program for fourth- through sixth-graders is designed to attract children, especially minorities, to science and engineering, said Yvonne Freeman, manager of the Minority Science and Engineering Office at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which collaborated with the district in establishing the program.

It will begin in February with 45 students and will operate throughout the year. Students will learn computer programing, engineering and physics. Freeman said officials hope to double enrollment by next summer. Teachers from throughout the district are now being trained to conduct the program.
