Contrary Views of Electoral ‘Tide’

Share

State Sen. John R. Lewis’ (R-Orange) “Elections Denote Conservative Tide” (Commentary, Nov. 19) was more of the same spoon-fed big lie that our peculiar brand of Republicans in Orange County like to dish out. Apparently, it’s easier to reach the desired conclusions irrespective of the facts.

Fact: The majority of eligible voters failed to turn out for the Nov. 5 elections (as they also failed to for Lewis’ own, as well as his successor’s, election). Hardly a mandate and hardly a “tide”--more like wishful thinking.

Fact: When the CEOs of some of America’s largest corporations favor national health insurance, it should awaken even the staunchest of Republicans to the conclusion that the time is coming for it to become a reality--especially in light of the fact that medicine and the law are the two areas of private enterprise that are allowed to regulate themselves (like most legislatures?).

Fact: Whenever Orange County politicians want to stifle dissent and explain away their own lack of leadership in handling local, state or federal problems, it’s convenient to blame someone else for their own shortcomings and failure to deal with reality.

Liberal Democrats, indeed.
