Reagan Legacy

You are becoming more brazen in our willingness to pursue a political agenda at the expense of objectivity in reporting. The article “Reagan Legacy of Deficits Seen Curbing Bush Action” (Nov. 8) is another example of a biased editorial dressed up and presented as a news article.

The tenor of the lengthy commentary was to squarely blame former President Reagan for today’s budgetary ills. It was replete with such “impartial” observations as “the Reagan-era tax cuts, coupled with the massive growth in defense spending in the 1980s, have left Washington facing budgetary gridlock.” Yet nowhere did your staff writers mention that it was the Democrat-controlled Congress, and not President Reagan, that drafted and passed each one of the federal budgets submitted during the Reagan era. Neither did they mention this same congressional hierarchy repeatedly rebuffed Reagan’s efforts to obtain the line-item veto, and who continue to slavishly invest their capital in the costly (and often wasteful) expansion of the welfare state.

I now support term limits for newspaper editors.
