* Just days after unveiling plans for a major reorganization, International Business Machines Corp. reported that the executive in charge of its important mainframe computer line has elected to take early retirement.

Carl Conti, 54, will step down as senior vice president and general manager of the Enterprise Systems line of business Dec. 31, ending a 32-year career at the world’s biggest computer company.

Conti will be succeeded by Vice President Nicholas Donofrio, who joined IBM in 1967.
