CYPRESS : College Expects Record Enrollment

Share

With fall-semester final examinations still looming, Cypress College officials already expect another record enrollment period in the spring.

“We are way ahead on our applications,” said Sandy McLeod, dean of admissions and records, adding that applications are up by about 465 students from last year.

McLeod attributes the surge in new students to the recession and increased tuition at other state campuses.

Last fall, enrollment at Cypress topped 15,400 and was second largest in the college’s 25-year history. McLeod expects a similar showing in the spring. To ease the problems caused by the burgeoning student population, this year the college introduced the Advantage early-registration system. The system allows students to pick up their registration packets and register on the same day. About 7,200 students used Advantage in the fall.

McLeod warns students to register early before classes reach capacity. Continuing students who don’t use Advantage can participate in walk-through registration, but they must have appointments. Registration for new students will be held Jan. 13 to 16 and again on Jan.21. Also, Jan. 22 has been set aside as an open registration day for both new and continuing students.
