A federal judge Tuesday extended his ban on the repatriation of thousands of Haitians intercepted at sea by U.S. ships while fleeing the troubled Caribbean nation.

U.S. District Judge C. Clyde Atkins granted a temporary injunction preventing the return of the Haitians seeking asylum in the United States. More than 6,000 have been intercepted since a Sept. 30 coup that toppled Jean-Bertrand Aristide, the country’s first freely elected president.
