Final election results have changed the order of finish in the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District board election, propelling challenger Mary Lou Gomez to victory over incumbent Bruce Butler.
Before absentee ballots were counted, Butler, a one-term incumbent, had finished ahead of Gomez by two votes. The final tally, certified last week, gave Gomez, a 50-year-old retired teacher, a narrow 17-vote edge over Butler.
In the Nov. 5 election, the top three vote-getters won board seats. Challenger Rudy Bermudez finished first with 3,009 votes. Incumbent Salvador Ambriz was second with 2,624 votes. Gomez was third with 2,586 votes, followed by losing incumbents Bruce Butler (2,569 votes) and William Campbell (2,114 votes).
