From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Most California wineries will stop using lead foil caps on wine bottles beginning Jan. 1 and will educate consumers to wipe the tops of bottles they already have, the state attorney general announced Friday. Atty. Gen. Dan Lungren disclosed the terms of a $900,000 settlement of a lawsuit his office filed in August. Testing by his office and the federal government showed that the amounts of lead leaching into wine from the foil caps exceeds the amount allowed by the state without a warning.
