AMERICA’S CUP

The America’s Cup Organizing Committee had extended Croatia’s deadline to find a sponsoring yacht club for the 1992 America’s Cup competition and the delay paid off for organizers of the former Yugoslavian challenge.

Only it won’t be Croatia. The ACOC has recognized the Transoceanic Racing Club YACOMa as the valid challenger that will represent the breakaway republic of Slovenia.

Croatia’s Yacht Club Galeb submitted Yugoslavia’s challenge on May 24, 1990, before civil war began in that country. When Galeb withdrew its challenge several months ago, TRC YACOMa, the syndicate that acted as its representative and is located in Maribor, Slovenia, indicated its desire to continue as a participant.

Marco Cantoni, an Italian ship builder who is assisting the syndicate, said its wooden boat will arrive here Jan. 9.
