A wave of strikes spread across Bulgaria on Saturday, just over a month after the country’s first non-Communist government in four decades came to power.

The strikes, called by the 1-million-member independent union Podkrepa and the official Union Federation, were called to demand raises and management changes and to protest layoffs.

The last government of former Communists was forced to resign in November, 1990, after a general strike.
