Howard’s House in the River Nadder Valley...

Share

Howard’s House in the River Nadder Valley (80 miles west of London) is one of those old English hotels Americans dream about. Originally a Tudor farmhouse. Dates from 1623. Only nine guest rooms, each with private bath. A drawing room with oak beams, a fireplace. Like living in a country house. Howard’s serves game in season, fish from the nearby Dorset Coast. Other items: roast beef with Yorkshire pudding and caramelized shallots, roast saddle of hare with pickled red cabbage, chestnuts and red wine sauce. Desserts range from hazelnut meringue with a dark chocolate parfait and coffee sauce to steamed apple and blackberry pudding with Calvados cream. Guests of Howard’s House hike wooded slopes behind the village of Teffont Evias, drink up at the local pub and explore the neighboring valleys of Test and Wylye, all of this 10 miles west of Salisbury. Little has changed in the village in 400 years. Teffont Evias draws those tourists wishing to unite the spirit with centuries already spent. The market village of Wilton isn’t far. And it’s a pleasant drive to Stonehenge and the National Trust Gardens at Stourhead. Proprietors Jonathan Ford and Paul Firmin also operate the popular Garden Room Restaurant in nearby Tisbury.

Howard’s House Hotel, Teffont Evias, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. Rates with breakfast from about $95 single, $145 double. Dinners: about $45 per guest.

Hawaii Hideaway: A note from Donna Fairfield of Ventura: “Read your article about ‘my’ island, Lanai. I have a beautiful 3,500-square-foot cedar home on Lanai. The obscurity and undeveloped nature of the island was the original attraction. We recently completed a six-month renovation project, upgrading the property inside and out. Our home offers a pleasurable alternative to Lanai’s new hotels. Accommodates 10 guests, so it’s good for families. There’s no butler, but the sound of the wind blowing through the Norfolk pines more than makes up for the necessity of fetching your own coffee in the morning.” Fairfield calls her home The Captain’s Retreat. One of only a handful of privately owned properties remaining on the island. Two stories. A large living room/dining room. Fireplace, TV, stereo. Three bedrooms, two baths, an outdoor shower, gas barbecue.

Contact Fairfield’s island agent, Phyllis Cole, P.O. Box 563, Lanai City, Hawaii 96763. Rates: $275 per day, $1,650 per week, $5,500 a month.
