OJAI : More Time Asked for Landfill Review

Share

The public should have more time to review the environmental report for the Weldon Canyon landfill proposed by Waste Management, Ventura County’s top planner said Tuesday.

Keith Turner will recommend today that the county Environmental Review Committee extend the review for 45 days. The committee will hold a public hearing today at 1:30 p.m. in the County Government Center.

The public review period was scheduled to end today. But critics, including the Ojai City Council, have clamored for more public scrutiny of the report on the landfill proposed for a canyon between Ojai and Ventura.

Turner cited the “sheer volume” of comments received during the current review period as the reason the committee should extend the review. The county has received more than 600 comments, he said.

“We are not convinced it is legally necessary, but it is safer to provide the additional review period,” Turner said.

If the review committee agrees, the public would have until Jan. 29 to submit comments.

“I am very happy,” said Ojai City Councilwoman Nina Shelley. “The seriousness of the changes demands a chance for public review.”
