NATION IN BRIEF : GEORGIA : U.S. Seeks Approval to Deport Haitians
The government told an appeals court that its interception of boatloads of U.S.-bound Haitians is proper and asked that a federal judge’s order blocking the return of the refugees be lifted. “The (lower) court said we should follow our procedures. . . . We are following our procedures,” Solicitor General Kenneth W. Starr told the U.S. 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta. The government’s handling of thousands of Haitians who fled their country after a military coup in September has been challenged in a lawsuit.
