The post office is bracing for an avalanche on Monday, the day it expects the biggest mail volume of the year.

The Monday before Christmas week is traditionally the agency’s busiest day. Officials expect to cancel 234 million cards and letters that day.

The agency expects to handle a total of 3.1 billion cards and letters by the end of the holidays.

On an average day the Postal Service cancels 45 million cards and letters, a flow that increases to 78 million a day during the holiday season and peaks on the Monday before Christmas week.

In addition to the items being canceled, mail flow on an average day also includes about 495 million business mailings that do not need cancellation.
