COUNTYWIDE : Training Will Deal With Sexual Assault

Share

Staff at Moorpark, Oxnard and Ventura colleges will begin to receive training next spring on dealing with victims of sexual assault on their campuses, a Ventura County Community College District official said last week.

The college district board of trustees has approved a new policy on how college staff should deal with people who are sexually assaulted on campus.

The policy stresses that the staff member who first comes into contact with a sexual assault victim is responsible for the victim, said John Tallman, vice chancellor of instructional and student services. Staff will be encouraged to treat victims with sensitivity and to refer them to legal and medical services and support groups.

Federal and state laws require that all colleges establish policies for dealing with such victims, Tallman said.

The only recent incident of alleged sexual assault on any of the three campuses involves former Moorpark College instructor Alejandro Paredes, who faces felony charges of sexual battery against a student, Tallman said.
