A teen-age boy was shot to death and another was wounded in a confrontation between rival gangs outside a party in an upscale Northridge neighborhood, police said Sunday.

The shootings occurred after an argument erupted between members of rival Filipino gangs who began firing at each other in the 10000 block of Oak Park Avenue at Stare Street, residents said.

The youths, whose ages and names were not released, were both shot about 11:40 p.m. Saturday, said Los Angeles Police Officer Robert Weier.

One boy died at a nearby hospital and the other was treated for bullet wounds and released, Weier said.

“There are no suspects and no motive,” Weier said. “However, the shooting appears to be gang-related.”

The two boys were members of rival gangs that met at a party given by Jonathan Zabala, 18, to celebrate his sister’s 15th birthday. He said about 300 people attended but that the gang members were not invited.

Zabala, whose hip-hop music group frequently performs at Filipino-American events in the Los Angeles area, said he had seen “some of those guys at other parties,” but knew little else about them.

“They were cussing at each other out front and I thought, ‘Oh no, there could be trouble,’ then I heard shooting and everything went crazy,” Zabala said.

A youth standing in the front yard fired five or six shots from a handgun at a cluster of people in the street, Zabala said. “Then they started shooting back and everybody was screaming and running.”

The gang members left after the shooting, Zabala said.

Bullet holes were found in a neighbor’s car and the garage of a nearby home. Zabala maintained that Saturday’s shootings were an isolated incident, but several neighbors, who asked not to be identified, said there have been other disturbances in the neighborhood in recent months.
