Asbestos

Bob Baker states in his article on residential asbestos contamination (Dec. 9) that “officials have long urged homeowners to have a laboratory test for asbestos before remodeling.”

Baker is certainly correct on this point, but he fails to emphasize the idea that to help eliminate the possibility of accidental exposure to the deadly fibers, public health officials encourage inspection or testing of any home where asbestos may have been used in construction, whether remodeling is planned or not.

Homes built in the 1950s and 1960s as well as earlier homes that have ducted gravity furnaces are likely to contain the material.
