Community Policing
THE PROGRAM: The Los Angeles Police Department has assigned 31 officers to full-time community relations duty in the San Fernando Valley. The officers, who in the past spent only a few hours a month on such duty, now work full-time with neighborhood organizations and individuals. One of the 31 areas is described below:
North Hollywood

THE AREA: Reeves’ area is a mostly working-class neighborhood with a mixture of residential, industrial and commercial properties. Nine of 12 North Hollywood gangs operate in the area and several Neighborhood Watch groups have been organized in recent years as a result. “They’re learning to fight back,” Reeves says of residents. Typical crime problems are armed robbery and auto burglary.
