The Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees this week ratified a new contract for its 1,300 classified employees that includes a 2% cost-of-living increase retroactive to last July.

“We are pleased that we were able to reach settlement before the winter holidays, particularly in such a difficult financial year,” said Marge Johnson, president of the employees association.

Although employees received a 3% salary increase last year, Johnson said the group is pleased with the outcome of negotiations.

“For this particular year, given the way finances are, employees are pleased with the 2%,” Johnson said. “We understand what’s going on with the state budget. There are peaks and valleys and right now, we’re down in the valley.”

District Supt. James A. Fleming said that the district struck the best deal it could for the employees during tough financial times.

“I am very pleased with the negotiations and pleased that the classified employees realize the financial position that the state and district are in,” Fleming said.

Classified employees consist of the district’s clerical workers, bus drivers, custodians, groundskeepers and food service workers.
