NHL ROUNDUP : Mullen’s Four Goals Power Penguins Past Islanders

Share

Joe Mullen is only the fourth-best scorer on the Pittsburgh Penguins. But he is outscoring the Kings’ Wayne Gretzky.

Mullen scored four goals Monday night at Uniondale, N.Y., to lead the Penguins to a 6-3 victory over the New York Islanders.

Mullen scored goals 35 seconds apart midway through the first period and again in the second and third periods.

The first three goals for Mullen, who has 45 points and 21 goals, were on power plays and were set up by Mario Lemieux. Gretzky has only 44 points this season.

Lemieux, who is once again the league’s leading scorer, also scored his 24th goal to thwart a late rally. He has 60 points in 32 games.

New York Rangers 3, New Jersey 0--Mike Gartner and Mike Richter gave the largest home crowd in the 66-year history of the Rangers something to celebrate.

The 18,200 fans at Madison Square Garden saw Gartner score twice and Richter stop 25 shots as the Rangers won their sixth in a row.

Hartford 4, Buffalo 3--John Cullen set up the tying goal in the third period at Hartford, then scored the winning goal less than three minutes later.

It was only the second victory in the last nine games for the Whalers. The Sabres have won only one of their last 14.

It was the Jets’ fifth defeat in the last six games.

Maple Lead center Mike Foligno suffered a broken right leg during the first period.

Edmonton 5, Calgary 3--Vince Damphousse broke a 3-3 tie at Edmonton with four seconds left in the second period. He scored again halfway through the final period to ensure the Oilers’ victory.
