Rancho Las Lomas, a 40-acre estate near Cook’s Corner, is available for conferences, seminars, weddings, fund-raisers and corporate functions. The Mediterranean-style rancho, owned by developers R.L. and Jeannie Lawrence, includes a botanical garden, semi-private zoo and a small amphitheater.

The estate’s white stucco buildings with red-tiled roofs are furnished with antiques and set with hand-painted Portuguese tiles and murals. The Teatro, an outdoor theater, seats 300 and is a popular spot for weddings. Overlooking the Teatro is Rick’s Cafe, with oak bar, stained glass, terraces and a river-rock fireplace. The cafe’s intimate alcoves and terraces are conducive to private conversation and renewing past acquaintances.

“Weddings are often a time when people who haven’t seen each other in years have a chance to get caught up with each other. The estate has lots of places where people can move away from the music and dancing to talk privately,” said Renee LeGrand , director. A stone barbecue is located next to the blue-tiled pool, where event hosts often float flowers and candles. The estate was once home to the Serrano family, Orange County pioneers. Aliso Creek winds through the property under stone bridges and through groves of sycamores and ancient oaks. A bungalow where brides may prepare before the wedding overlooks an orange grove surrounded by blooming vines and roses. At night, the rancho becomes even more intimate, with carefully placed spotlights on the trees, pathways and terraces.

“The rancho appeals to people who enjoy nature and are looking for an alternative to hotel ballrooms for special events,” said LeGrand, who is planning to have her own wedding at the estate. “It’s quiet here, with few distractions, so it’s also a good site for conferences and seminars,” she said.

Weddings and events are not rushed through in assembly-line fashion. Only one event per day is held at the estate, which guarantees the host an unhurried and private enjoyment of the surroundings. An advance tour may be arranged by appointment. Hours: By appointment. Address: 19191 Lawrence Canyon, Orange. Telephone: (714) 589-9630 Miscellaneous Information: Facility rental fee is $3,500 plus $500 deposit. Event hosts provide their own music and valet parking. Caterers must show proof of insurance.
