Paraguayan President Andres Rodriguez, who led the 1989 army coup that toppled longtime strongman Alfredo Stroessner, said Monday he will not seek reelection when his term expires in 1993.

If Rodriguez makes way for the winner of the 1993 elections, it will be the first time in Paraguayan history that a president has handed power to an elected successor.
