Ross Leaves Georgia Tech to Coach the Chargers

Bobby Ross, who led Georgia Tech to a shared national championship in 1990, resigned Tuesday to become coach of the San Diego Chargers, signing a four-year contract to take over the team that finished last in the AFC West.

Ross said he had envisioned remaining at Georgia Tech for the remainder of his coaching career. But after compiling a 31-26-1 record in five seasons, he said he realized that, at 55, if he ever was going to make such a move, the time was now.

Georgia Tech will form a search committee to find a replacement for Ross. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that coaches who would get top consideration include Virginia Tech’s Frank Beamer, East Carolina’s Bill Lewis and Georgia Tech defensive coordinator George O’Leary.
