Ross Assistant Joins Chargers

Share

Coach Bobby Ross left Georgia Tech to become the Chargers’ ninth head coach, and brought along Chuck Priefer to coach special teams here.

Priefer worked as special teams coach for the Green Bay Packers in 1984 and 1985, and after serving as Kent State’s defensive coordinator for a year, he coached the defensive backs at Georgia Tech for five years.

Ross said he’s waiting to hear from Georgia Tech offensive coordinator Ralph Friedgen on whether he’ll become the Chargers’ offensive backs coach, and said that defensive coordinator George O’Leary has agreed to coach the Chargers’ linebackers or defensive line if he isn’t named Ross’ successor at Georgia Tech.

Ross will interview Monte Clark, the former Detroit Lion and San Francisco 49er head coach today for the offensive line, and he will also talk to former New England head coach Rod Rust about the team’s defensive coordinator post.

Sandie Hughes, head coach’s secretary, and Rita Raney, coach’s assistant secretary, also were let go today.
