Wagner in Israel

Share

Is Daniel Barenboim so naive as to think that the possibility of outspoken protest at a concert in Israel that includes Wagner’s music is remote (“Wagner Programming Breaks Taboo for Israel,” Dec. 17)?

Even if they did not plan to protest, the feelings evoked by such music in concentration-camp survivors may be so strong that they may be driven to spontaneous outbursts. It would be wiser to wait until the survivors are long deceased before playing Wagner in Israel. There is no shortage of music by other composers for the symphonic repertoire.
