Paul D. Jefferson of Pomona, a Los Angeles Police Department captain, assumed command of the 77th Street Division of the LAPD on Dec. 1.

A 23-year veteran of the LAPD, Jefferson was transferred from the Foothill Patrol Division, where he was commanding officer. Jefferson was moved to Foothill in April to help restore public confidence in the station after the Rodney G. King incident.

Four Foothill officers were charged with beating King after he was pulled over for a traffic violation in March. The incident drew national notoriety after an amateur photographer videotaped the beating.
