U.S. Firms Split on China Sanctions: In statements prepared for government hearings, U.S. manufacturers said the United States must impose stiff punitive tariffs on Chinese imports to force China to comply with international copyright and patent rules. But several U.S. retailers and importers said the proposed trade sanctions could be disastrous for businesses, consumers and the economy. The hearings concern Trade Representative Carla Anderson Hills’ call to impose tariffs of up to 100% on $750 million in Chinese imports, including textiles and apparel, leather goods, wristwatches, some metals and electronic items. Hills set Jan. 16 as a deadline to settle the dispute on intellectual property rights or impose sanctions.
