Thieves broke into the mausoleum of auto pioneer R. E. Olds and stole the remains of six family members, police said Monday.

The theft at the Lansing Mt. Hope Cemetery was discovered Friday, but it is not known when the crime occurred, Lansing police Lt. Sam Campbell said.

Police are looking for a number of missing items, many with the names of the deceased engraved on them. They include two stainless steel boxes, one infant coffin, one bronze box and two urns, Campbell said.

He said the urns, boxes and coffin contained the remains of six relatives, but he would not specify who they were.

R. E. Olds’ crypt was not disturbed.
