GRADE CARDS: Educators are split over whether the NCAA should toughen academic standards for freshman athletes, a hot controversy at its Anaheim convention this week (C1). UC Irvine President Jack W. Peltason welcomes the proposal to raise the 2.0 grade average requirement to 2.5. . . . “I’m for ensuring we have bona fide students on the playing field working toward a degree,” he says. But Cal State Fullerton administrator Robert Emry says the school wants more flexibility. . . . “Some don’t excel until after high school,” he says. “I wouldn’t have made it on a 2.5, and I went on to a Ph.D.”
