MISSION VIEJO : Swim Team to Set Up Strawberries Stand

The Nadadores swim team, which needs money to keep its program afloat after the Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, received permission from the Planning Commission on Monday night to operate a strawberries stand.

The stand will operate at the northwest corner of Estanciero Drive and Marguerite Parkway this month through July. McWhinney Berries of Huntington Beach will provide the fruit and donate $1 to the club from each flat of strawberries sold.

“As a commission, we don’t like the idea of allowing produce stands in the middle of town,” said Planning Commission member Sherrie Butterfield. “But it seemed like a good way for the Nadadores to raise funds.”

The commission, however, denied a similar proposal from a local Boy Scout troop. Butterfield said the Scouts’ stand would have operated at Country Club Drive and Oso Parkway, the site of heavy construction work by the Moulton Niguel Water District in the near future. McWhinney Berries would also have run the stand.

“Our concern was over traffic,” Butterfield said. “We may have created a problem we couldn’t handle.”
