SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO : Crackdown Pledged on Smutty Materials

Share

Two parents who pleaded with the City Council this week to clean up the proliferation of pornographic material in the city have obtained promises of help from Mayor Gil Jones and other council members.

Robin Griffin and Rita Skora of San Juan Capistrano presented the council with a letter Tuesday night that chastised some local stores for allowing what they called pornographic material to be viewed by minors.

“The purpose of our protest is to urge stricter control of pornographic material, particularly its accessibility to minors,” Griffin told the council.

She called for the material, described as books, magazines and films, to be kept locked and supervised.

“It came to our attention that children after school . . . would view at least the covers of books . . . for their afternoon entertainment,” Griffin said. “We’re calling for immediate action.”

Jones said he is sensitive to their pleas. “Not only do children need to be protected from it, but some of our adults need to be protected from it,” he said. “I guarantee we will do something about it.”

The council will ask the city attorney to look into strengthening the city’s laws regarding the display of pornographic material.
