The Orange County district attorney’s office is expected to file charges today against a 15-year-old live-in baby-sitter who is accused of killing an infant in her care.

The girl, whose name was withheld because of her age, was held Wednesday in Juvenile Hall without bail, Santa Ana Police Lt. Bob Helton said. She was ordered into custody on grounds she might flee to Mexico.

The 9-month-old infant, Oscar Miguel Vargas, was killed late Monday, police said. He suffered from severe shaking and blunt force caused by a hand or a fist, according to results of an autopsy.

The girl is accused of killing Oscar on Monday night, authorities said. Oscar’s body was discovered shortly after midnight on Tuesday by his parents, Rogelio Vargas, 26, and Maria Eusebio, 22.

Police arrested the girl, who moved into Vargas’ home 3 1/2 weeks ago, after Vargas’ son told them that he saw her beating Oscar earlier in the evening.

“It is our belief that she is solely responsible for the injuries to the child,” Helton said.
