FASHION : Still Fishing for Compliments

Share

CATCH OF THE YEAR--Sunday marks the anniversary of the fish tie, the necktie so garishly charming that even its creator admits it may be the ugliest tie ever to flop across the chests of men. And though it’s 6 years old--a relic in the fashion biz--the tie that realistically resembles a dead fish is still selling. In 1991 it accounted for 5% of the nearly $5 million in sales the Wisconsin-based Ralph Marlin company racked up, says Mark Abramoff, the firm’s founder.

A former stereo salesman, Abramoff decided to produce his idea for neckwear one Saturday night in 1986 when he was drinking in a bar with an old high school buddy, who offered to put up $50,000 for the business. These days, the Ralph Marlin line consists of about 400 items, including ties, boxer shorts, T-shirts and watches. Many of the latest additions bear licensed designs and logos, such as the “Star Trek” tie (pictured; $19.95). The firm also offers ties with likenesses of James Dean, Marilyn Monroe and Buckwheat, the latter being “the real sleeper of the year.”

Last year’s bestseller was the same as 1990’s: a pig tie in which the pigs wear human expressions. The way Abramoff figures it, the pigs are perfect for lots of recipients: cops, pig lovers and chauvinists. This year, Abramoff has decided to stop acting like a fish out of water. Starting today, he’s a resident of Manhattan Beach, though his company is staying in the Midwest. As he explains, “I am way too weird for Wisconsin.”

DEAR HOT: I need a bathing suit for a Super Bowl pool party (indoors).

Where can I find the best selection this time of year?

DEAR HOT SHOPPER: You’re right, bathing suit selection is at low ebb right now.

Stores just don’t stock the range they once did at this time of year. Must be that resort wear isn’t exactly in tune with recession.

For the best selection I know of, head for the shops along Venice Beach boardwalk.

If you prefer malls, try the Everything but Water shops all over the place, including Glendale Galleria, South Coast Plaza and Topanga Plaza.

IF YOU THINK THIS IS WONDERFUL, WAIT ‘TIL WE GET TO PIC ‘N’ SAVE--Overheard conversation between a couple shopping in a Marina del Rey drugstore:

Woman: “This is a really great Sav-On.”

Man: “Any store you’re in is really great.”
